Learn to teach and reach all students in diverse school settings through the lens of social justice.

The Department of Education develops educators with moral and ethical purpose. The program applies current educational and information literacy theories, uses intercultural knowledge in the classroom, and maintains professional excellence—all to serve the needs of a democratic and diverse society.

You’ll learn to address the needs of 21st century students through skills development in communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking, as well as information, media and technology. Students begin with foundational knowledge in the following, then progress to subject-specific pedagogies and reflective classroom practice.

  • Special Education
  • Teaching English-Language Learners
  • Child and Adolescent Development
  • Culture and Diversity
  • Instructional Technology

All Multiple Subject, Single Subject and Education Specialist candidates follow the same developmental sequence of courses, which are divided into three categories:

  • Foundational Courses
  • Pedagogy and Reflective Practice
  • Supervised Fieldwork

Courses are assigned specific Teaching Performance Expectations (TPEs). Candidates engaged in student-teaching or intern-teaching have opportunities to understand, practice and apply pedagogical competencies as defined by the TPEs.

We offer 32-unit graduate programs leading to a master of science degree in education. This program is designed for education professionals who are interested in teaching and learning, and wish to prepare for leadership roles in education.
