The core requirements of this flexible major focus on literature, cultural literacy, and interdisciplinary studies. In addition, you will choose electives from other humanities fields like art history, creative writing, cultural studies, gender studies, history, music, philosophy and religion.
All students select one 12-unit track. Track choices include:
- Liberal Arts
- Teacher Preparation
- Creative Writing
Regardless of the chosen track, all students undertake a research-based capstone project on a topic of their choosing. These projects can take many forms, depending on your interests and training, including writing a research or photo-journalistic essay, creating a film, website or podcast, and more. Creative writing students will devise original work within a chosen genre, such as a collection of poems, a novella, or work of historical fiction.
Career Paths
Our graduates have pursued careers in teaching, social work, publishing, or other fields where strong skills in analysis, interpretation, and writing are needed and valued. Other students have been mid-career professionals seeking to advance their careers.
